This is a mint, high quality, 19th Century Antique hand made Gentleman's jacket pocket carrying case for Cigars. In the mid to late 19th Century, almost all men used tobacco of some sort. This case was made to carry cigars, that were very popular in the late 1800's. Only a Man of means would have been able to afford such a fine smoking accessory. Wealthy gentlemen and gamblers desired fancy goods; i.e., a fancy Cigar holder that would, when occasion required, be brought out of the jacket pocket with great Victorian flourish; offering a Cigar to their friend or acquaintance with a flair of gentlemanly courtesy. Even then, these cigar cases were considered an Object D' Art and a status symbol. This case is 4 1/4" tall x 3" wide x 3/4" thick, and is heavy for it's size, weighing 4 ounces or 113 grams.
This is an extremely well made case with attention to detail such as the 4 cigar shape with a deeply embossed diagonal ridged pattern, a 6 pronged hinge, an applied lip to the insides of the 2 identical deeply embossed shells, a perfect alignment of the front and back pieces, a spring loaded push button release on the right side, and delicate gold wash on the inside that is intact and unused. This piece is hallmarked in 3 places; on the top flat end along the edge of both the front and back shells, "Rd 169478" as well as on the inside of the spring loaded clasp. This is an English Registry mark was a complex diamond symbol starting in 1842-67, revised in 1868-83, and changed in 1884 to using a just a registry number. This piece is in mint condition, and does not show any wear that would ascertain the base metal. *Note this piece does not have typical English sterling marks, so it is probably heavily silver plated brass or steel; perhaps quadruple plated like many period pieces. A heavier metal base would have been much more resistant to the dings and scratches associated with the thinner, softer silver metal. The channels between the raised diagonal ridges shows natural aged patina. I do not have a silver testing kit, so except for the lack of a sterling mark, it is impossible to discern if this piece is sterling just by examining it. This hand made piece was accomplished by Specialized Master Craftsman. There are no dings, dents, damage or repairs. With no scuffs or scratch marks demonstrates it is in mint, unused condition, was "put up", and obviously was well taken care of since 1891. Although this piece can still be used, in my opinion, this piece should be admired and displayed as Object D` Art due to being in mint, unused condition. This handsome case would be perfect for any cigar, cigar cutter, tobacco user, Tobacciana, Gentleman's, Smoking accessory, 19th century accouterment / accessory, or would make an impressive gift or presentation piece.
